Note: the VMware Tools I linked was the latest for WS v8 which might be better then using the ones from 9.x as there were some major changes although if you nat you can get whatever version you want here.Question: How do I uncompress a *.7z file ( 7zip file ) in UNIX / Linux ? Can you explain with a simple example?Īnswer: Use 7za command to unzip a 7z file ( 7zip file ) on Unix platform as shown below. and then untar and execute tools-linux-8.8.6.exe.tar and it silently installs the linux.iso and files to the VMware Workstation working directory. I just added the VMware product version number to the original name, e.g. If you choose to do so you'll need to rename the original so it's not overwritten during the individual VMware Tools install. In some cases it did and in others it didn't I have used different newer versions of VMware Tools in older VMware products in the past mainly with Linux VM's however it was more with just testing to see if it would work around an issue. That said, yes you could download a different version of VMware Tools and install it however it may cause some issues. Another similar process of untar is gzip utility with the command gunzip. By default, most of the Linux are pre-installed with GNU tar. In the computation world, there are two different versions of tar, namely BSD tar and GNU tar. My thread on this in the Mint forum is here.įirst I'd say that the general rule is to use the appropriate version of VMware Tools, meaning the version that shipped with the VMware product. Untar is a process of reversion of the process which leads to formation of the tar file. If so were there any special actions to get it going? Like getting a Linux driver for the vmware virtual graphics card? Has anyone here been successful in running Linux Mint 13 Cinnamon 64bit guests properly using WorkStation 7.1.6 on Windows 7? It was suggested on the Mint forum that if the video driver is not 3D capable the Cinnamon desktop cannot run and it falls back to Gnome instead. I have enabled 3D acceleration for the video in both 13 and 15 and I have installed the vmware tools with no problems on both. The strange thing is that another guest running Linux Mint 15 works just fine including the Cinnamon features in the same host PC. What happens is that Cinnamon does not start so it defaults to Gnome instead, with less control of the desktop. I am having trouble getting Cinnamon to run properly in a 64 bit Linux Mint 13 cinnamon 64bit virtual machine on my Win7X64 host.
